Storage recommendation:

What part of the wheat kernel is the germ?

This is the smallest portion of the wheat kernel, but contains most of the nutrients.



Is this wheat germ toasted?

This product is heat treated, not toasted.


 

What difference does heat-treating make?

Heat-treating stabilizes the oil and allows the product to have a longer shelf life.



Can I toast it?

Yes,toasting may be done on a cookie sheet in one layer on a very low oven (250°); stir often and remove just when a toasted odor occurs (about 5 minutes).


 

What nutritional value is in cinnamon?

Cinnamon may have beneficial effect for people with diabetes. Research is ongoing.



How can I add wheat germ to my diet?

Wheat germ can be added to cereal, salads, casseroles, yogurt and more. It can be added to baked goods but moisture may need to be adjusted. Hodgson Mill has a Wheat Bran/Wheat Germ recipe booklet available upon request.


Is your wheat germ heat treated?

Yes, stabilized wheat germ is heat treated.  Heat treatment is the method used to stabilize the product and the product is heated to between 70-85 degrees C.


Why is my product jumping around in the pouch?

This is caused by static electricity between the bag material and the product. It is harmless.


What happens if I do not refrigerate this?

The natural oils in the wheat germ and the flax are best kept cool or cold. Rancidity is a possibility if it is not stored properly.
