Product Specific Questions:

Product of the USA:

1c. of org. soy flour is 86 grams

Is this a whole grain?

No, soy is a legume.

Is this flour defatted or full fat?

This soy flour is not defatted.  It is made with the whole soybean.

How do I use it?

Do not use more than 1/3 of the total flour as soy in a recipe. Mix it with other flour or flours for best results. Reduce the oven temperature by 25 degrees and increase the baking time by 5 minutes.  (Food Works Int. recommends: For yeast breads you can replace 2TBS per cup of flour ...place 2 TBS soy flour in the cup then fill remainder with your usual flour.  For quick breads you can replace 25% of the flour with soy flour (1/4 cup per cup of flour called for), this would be a safe starting point.

Why?

All Soy flour has natural sugars and protein which cause it to brown quickly.

My soy flour looks yellow. Is that normal?

Yes

Why does my soy flour smell funny?

Soy flour should have a strong grass smell. It is a legume.

Can I fry with it?

We do not recommend it as the lone flour. Mix it with other flour first. Soy flour browns very quickly.

Can I use this in a bread machine?

Yes, blend with other flours. It helps to make a tender crumb in bread.

If I store my flour in the freezer, what do I do before using it in a recipe?

It is best to bring all ingredients to room temperature before use, unless otherwise specified in the recipe.

Why does it need to be room temperature?

Because cold ingredients may adversely affect the yeast performance.

Is flour bromated?

No

This flour does not have a non-gmo logo on it.  Does it contain genetically modified ingredients?

The United States and Canadian governments do NOT allow companies to label products “100% / Certified Organic” if they contain genetically modified foods. (gmo-awareness.com) However, Hodgson Mill Organic Soy Flour has not been through the non-gmo verification process, so it does not carry the non-gmo logo.

This flour can be used as a bee food supplement.
